Spontaneous pneumothorax followed by reversed halo sign in immunocompromised patient with pulmonary mucormycosis
Mucormycosis, an invasive fungus with a variety of clinical presentation, is a devastating infection in immunocompromised host. Here an unusual case of pulmonary mucormycosis is introduced in an immunodeficient patient in which pneumothorax was followed by reversed halo sign (RHS). The clinicians, who visit immunocompromised persons with pneumothorax, should be considerate to take immediate ima...
متن کاملClinical picture Reverse halo sign in pulmonary mucormyosis
Reverse halo sign (RHS), also called the atoll sign, was described as a rim of consolidation surrounding a center of ground-glass opacity on computed tomography (CT). Although RHS was previously considered as non-specific sign for various disorders, recent study showed that it is a strong indicator of pulmonary mucormycosis (PM). We present a case of PM with typical imaging presentation on CT, ...
متن کاملSpontaneous pneumothorax as a first sign of pulmonary carcinoma
We report five cases of spontaneous pneumothorax as the first sign of pulmonary carcinoma. Initial tests did not detect neoplasms. Diagnosis took place during surgery for four patients and the fifth was diagnosed by preoperative computed tomography to assess pulmonary bullous emphysema. All five patients had persistent air leaks in spite of correct placement and functioning of drains, the reaso...
متن کاملThe reversed halo sign: pathognomonic pattern of pulmonary mucormycosis in leukemic patients with neutropenia?
BACKGROUND Pulmonary mucormycosis (PM) is a life-threatening fungal infection with an increasing incidence among patients with acute leukemia. In some immunocompromised hosts, the reversed halo sign (RHS) has been described on the pulmonary computed tomographic (CT) scan of patients with mucormycosis. METHODS This study reports a single-center experience with PM exclusively in patients with...
متن کاملIs It Time to Include CT “Reverse Halo Sign” and qPCR Targeting Mucorales in Serum to EORTC-MSG Criteria for the Diagnosis of Pulmonary Mucormycosis in Leukemia Patients?
In 23 leukemia patients with proven (n = 17) or possible (n = 6) pulmonary mucormycosis (PM), the presence of reversed halo sign on computed tomography was strongly associated with the positivity of quantitative polymerase chain reaction assays targeting Mucorales in the serum, confirming the value of these two tools for the diagnosis of PM in this setting.
